Standard Bank supports teacher training in chess

The first teachers training course in chess took place between July 3th and 5th, as part of the project that aims to massify the practice of this sport in the country, having trained 150 primary school teachers from different schools within the city and province of Maputo.

Standard Bank is the sponsor of this initiative promoted by the Matola Chess School, supported by the Ministry of Education. The Bank provided material for the practice of chess and guaranteed the necessary conditions for the implementation of the project.

During the closing ceremony of the training course, Standard Bank’s representative, Alfredo Lemos, addressed those present as follows: “As part of its social responsibility, Standard Bank unconditionally supports this project because the popularization of chess in primary schools is an opportunity for more Mozambicans to have quality training and opportunities for human and intellectual development”.

The closing ceremony of the training course had a positive adherence and was attended by the councillor for Health and Education of the Maputo municipality, Norbay Calú, who described the project as very important and a real commitment to education in the country. “Today is not the end of the training course, but rather the beginning, because when they start practicing the activity they will face difficulties, which they can only solve every and each day at work” - she said as she addressed the trainees.

The training course took place at the Tsindya Municipal Cultural Centre, a place where chess can be played. A chess tournament will take place on November 10th to commemorate the Maputo city Day.
