Christmas for Patients at Jose Macamo General Hospital

21 December 2012

In an initiative integrated in the corporate social responsibility context, Standard Bank has offered a total of 200 kits, consisting of several toys, and an equal number of baskets containing basic foodstuffs essential to sick children and their caregivers in the various wards and services of the Jose Macamo General Hospital, in Maputo.

During the activity, which occurred on Saturday, December 15, Standard Bank also offered lunch to children and their parents in addition to several entertainment activities, animated by clowns. Standard Bank employees sang, danced and played with the children, sharing the joy and peace that characterize the holiday season.

Speaking immediately after the delivery of the offers, Standard Bank’s representative, Carlos Madeira said that “the choice for the Jose Macamo Hospital is due to the fact that it is a great hospital that receives patients from various neighbourhoods of the city, and serves as a reference for many people who live outside the city, a fact that makes it become almost always packed when compared with others of the same size”.

On her turn, Leila Monteiro, director of the Jose Macamo General Hospital, praised Standard Bank’s gesture, considering that “in hospitals there are children from families in need and because we are in the Christmas season we’re flattered for benefiting, in our hospital, from solidarity actions such as this one from Standard Bank”.

She added that the Jose Macamo General Hospital has experienced a huge number of patients: “On average we have served about 300 children per day, coming from different parts of the city and Maputo province,” she stressed.

To support Standard Bank, Alice Pedro Magaia Abreu, Maputo City chief doctor, said this is one of the “main objectives of the Ministry of Health, which advocates the transformation of the health unit, not just into the place where diseases are treated but also into a joyful place, that conveys a little of what is the affection and care of health professionals”.

Approached after receiving the basket and toys for her child, Gina da Graca thanked Standard Bank for the offer. She said that it was the first time she ever received a gift on Christmas’ occasion: “With these products I’ll prepare a good meal for my children”, she concluded.
