The foundation stone for the construction of the new headquarters of Standard Bank was launched in Maputo last Thursday (November 8th).

The project, which is part of the proposed expansion of the Bank’s infrastructure, will run for about 18 months and is valued at 42 million U.S.dollars.

It is an imposing modern building of seven floors with totally glass front facade, comprising all central services of the Bank, namely offices, meeting rooms, including car parks.

The ceremony was attended by the Governor of the Central Bank of Mozambique, Ernesto Gove, Maputo City Mayor, David Simango, the Chairman of Standard Bank, Tomaz Salomão, members of the Executive Committee of the Bank, among other distinguished guests.

Gove said, on the occasion, that the size of the investment to be made by Standard Bank represents the confirmation of the 150 years of experience that this commercial bank has in Africa and in the rest of the world, of which 118 years in Mozambique.

“I assume that this investment is due to the fact that our country finds itself on an upward trajectory, which has as its background the political and macroeconomic stability”, said the governor of the Central Bank, adding that this is “a project which represents the confidence that people have in the future of a country which has been growing at higher rates if compared with neighboring countries, Africa and the world”.

According to the chairman of Standard Bank, “More than offering a welcoming space, with high technology to respond to customer demands, with speed and all the professionalism that is already our characteristic, the new headquarters of Standard Bank will bring together several services that are now dispersed”.

Salomão stressed that, “the construction of the new headquarters is a clear sign of the commitment of Standard Bank to the growth of the city and Standard Bank intends to continue for another 100 years helping Mozambicans to do business and improve their lives”.

“With 118 years operating in the country, we feel that it is time to associate the classic posture, that is our characteristic, with a little modernity and youthfulness”, said the Chairman of the Board.

On his turn, Maputo City Mayor, David Simango, took the opportunity to point out that “the foundation stone for the construction of the new headquarters of Standard Bank coincides with the 125th anniversary of our town, so we consider this project, a gift to the city”, said the mayor of Maputo City.
