Standard Bank committed in the fight against malaria
As part of its social responsibility practices, Standard Bank
promoted on April 28th, at Escola Secundária Noroeste-I, a secondary educational institution based in Maputo, a class talk on malaria, seeking to drive the awareness of the society, specifically targeted at young people, to think about this disease, which is a leading cause of death in Mozambique.
During the class talk, which was followed by an indoor soccer match, involving the students and the ambassador of Standard Bank Mozambique in the Fight Against Malaria, the soccer coach, Chiquinho Conde, Standard Bank offered to the educational institution mosquito bed nets and soccer balls.
Also part of this initiative, during the World Malaria Day, which is worldwide celebrated on April 25th, Standard Bank also donated mosquito bed nets in Nampula, to the Health Care Centre 25 de Setembro, a portion of which were distributed to pregnant women and other patients who were visiting the facility.
The Head of the Human Resources Department at Standard Bank, Hélia Campos, said that the Bank has been putting a lot of effort by promoting a number of activities as part of Malaria Campaign, as a contribution to eradicate malaria, because “we firmly believe that only a society free from this disease will allow communities to develop”.
“We are offering mosquito bed nets to the students from Escola Secundária Noroeste-I to motivate them, and their families, to also use this method of prevention that is very effective”, explained Hélia Campos.
In turn, the pedagogical director at Escola Secundária Noroeste-I, Domingos Ossufo, said that Standard Bank’s initiative “is praised and recognized, because the class talk helped to better explain to the students, fundamental information about the basic rules and guidelines for the prevention against malaria”.
With regards to the bed nets offered by Standard Bank, Ossufo affirmed that they will surely help to solve a significant part of the problem.
Amélia João, a student from the school commented that “the talk was very insightful, because it felt like an hard ear pull, because there was a lot of information about the pretention of malaria that I realized today that was wrong”.
Fátima Rodrigues, also a student, said “it was a very educational lecture. I learnt how to correctly use the mosquito net and that we should get rid of stagnant water because this is the focal point of the mosquitoes that cause malaria”.
Standard Bank, present in Mozambique for over 100 years, has been playing a key and active role in developing the economy of Mozambique and other Southern African countries through the financing of major socio-economic projects and providing financial services and banking solutions that are relevant.
For Standard Bank, its long-term success and growth can only be achieved by continuing to make a difference to the communities on which it operates, by offering relevant products and meaningful social projects.
