Standard Bank supports rebuilding of orphanage and hospital destroyed by cyclone Dineo

19 April 2017

The Chicuque Rural Hospital and the Cambine Orphanage, located in the city of Maxixe and in the district of Morrumbene, respectively, in Inhambane, received a support from Standard Bank on Thursday 12 April to carry out replacement works of the infrastructure destroyed by Cyclone Dineo, which struck that province on last 15 February.

Each one of the institutions received a check for 400,000 meticais (Four hundred Thousand Meticais), which will be used to restore the damage caused by the cyclone, and thereby help the hospital and the orphanage to resume normal operation.

According to Jair Ismael, the branch manager of Standard Bank of Maxixe, this support is part of a series of solidarity actions that the bank will carry out in that part of Inhambane, in which opening was marked by the delivery of a check for 1,200 meticais (One million and two hundred thousand Meticais) to the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC).

"The damages caused by Cyclone Dineo are, until now, visible, where many families were left homeless, institutions had their infrastructure partially or totally destroyed, etc. Against this sad scenario, Standard Bank could not remain indifferent and is here to give support whenever necessary, "explained Jair Ismael.

With this support, Standard Bank hopes to lessen the impact caused by cyclone Dineo not only on beneficiary institutions but also on community life. The Chicuque Rural Hospital saw its service capacity reduced as a result of the passing of that natural phenomenon.

According to the clinical director, Idália Machave, the damages were great, being the main affected areas the consultation block, the medical-surgical warehouse, the depot of the pharmacy, the baths, besides the medical staff residences.

It is in this sense that Idalia Machave looks to this gesture as "a contribution that will help to rebuild the hospital and to improve the care of the patients not only from Maxixe but also from other areas of Inhambane province."

The Chicuque Hospital Rural is a reference health unit in the region, with an inpatient capacity of 154 beds and has pediatrics, medicine, surgery and maternity wards, gynecology services, as well as a block for external consultations.

"The ammount offered by Standard Bank will be applied to the purchase of zinc sheets, bars and cement for the replacement of the two-bedroom roof, dining room, warehouse and kitchen," said Maravilha Pondzole, director of the Cambine Orphanage.

“This support will be very useful. We have a lot to recover and with this support from Standard Bank we are half way”, said the director of the Orphanage, which houses 49 children and 18 youngsters, who, besides studying, have extracurricular activities such as agriculture, livestock breeding, carpentry, sports, etc.
