With the issuance of approximately 4.000 identification documents: Citizenship Campaign continues in Nacala Porto

20 October 2016

Under the citizenship project, promoted by Standard Bank, a total of 3,851 identification documents, including biometric Identity Documents (IDs), NUITs - Single Taxpayer Identification Number, personal identity documents and birth certificates were issued for free, between September 27 to October 2, in the city of Nacala, Nampula province.

During six days, the mobile brigades of the National Civil Identification Directorate, Mozambique Tax Authority and Registry and Notary issued 2,787 IDs, 486 NUITs, 529 personal identity documents and 49 birth certificates, respectively.

Due to the worrying lack of identification documents in Mozambique, particularly in rural areas,  any communities lose their rights and opportunities to enjoy some benefits of development.

This campaign of child registration, issuance of Identity Documents and NUITs in Nacala, is part of Standard Bank’s strategy, to create conditions for the well-being of communities in which the  financial services provider operates.

The chairman of the Board of Directors of Standard Bank, Tomaz Salomão said, by the way, that the initiative aims to promote the effective enjoyment of citizenship to citizens of Nacala by providing them civil identity that they need to access public services.

“Additionally, we intend to support Government initiatives with a view to broadening the tax base and also help to reduce the gap between citizens with and without biometric identity documents, which today is a basic requirement for the acquisition of other vital documents”, said the chaiman.

For the Registrar of the Registry and Notary of Nacala Porto, Maria Inês da Costa, Standard Bank citizenship campaign promoted in Nacala, brings an added value to the population, because it will help minimize the problem of lack of personal identification documents, since many children live apparently abandoned and without civil identification.

“This process will also help the Registrar to be closer to citizens, which is why we thank Standard Bank for the initiative, at a time when many people are not going to the conservatory to regularize the registration of their children due to various factors, including the lack of resources and civic education”, said Maria Inês da Costa.

One of the beneficiaries of the project, Adriano Rodolfo, is in favour of the Bank project in Nacala: “We welcome this leading action, as Standard Bank is helping the population of Nacala, which sometimes does not have the time to go to the Civil Identification Directorate, to get IDs. Moreover, the difficult financial situation faced by many families makes people choose other priorities,” said the young man.

He added that “in my case, for example, my ID was expiring next month, so I took this opportunity that Standard Bank provided, to renew it without paying anything. Now I can continue with my life normally”.
