Main protection measures
- Always stay alert: fraudsters are known for tricking their victims into believing that they are well-known institutions, such as Standard Bank. Do not share personal information or account details by email or phone.
- Do not click on attachments, hyperlinks or icons in unsolicited emails. Even if they appear to be from Standard Bank. Delete the email immediately and go to the nearest branch or call us directly to verify the email and information that you received.
- Never share personal or confidential details: Do not disclose any personal or account details by email or phone, irrespective of the information they may have about you.
- Stay alert to misleading websites: Always remember to type the URL in the internet browser to access the webpage, instead of clicking on hyperlinks supplied.
- Report suspicious frauds: If you think that you have received a scam or have fallen prey to a scam, it is best to stop all forms of communication and report the incident immediately.
- Here are a few more ways to ensure that your banking details remain protected:
- Create a strong password
- To ensure that your online banking profile remains secure, follow these tips on how to create a strong password:
- Use unique passwords for each of your accounts.
- It is risky to use the same password for all your accounts. If anyone discovers the password of one account, he/she may access all your other accounts, including personal details and confidential information.
- Include a combination of (uppercase and lowercase) letters, numbers and special characters.
- Make sure that your password has at least eight characters.
- There is no minimum length for a password, but create a password that is at least eight characters long. This will help to ensure that your password remains strong and avoid others guessing it.
- Avoid known information, such as names, places, common words.
- Your password should not be obvious; accordingly, do not use personal information such as your name, family names, your residence, date of birth, etc.. Do not use simple words or phrases such as “password” or keyboard patterns such as “qwerty”. This will only make it easy to guess your password.
- Change your password regularly.
- Your password is the key to your bank account and should be changed periodically. We recommend that you change your password every 30 days.
- Protect your password
- Do not disclose your password, personal details and confidential information to anyone — online or by phone.
